My cats are fat. Not "cool" fat. Or Phat. (Thank God we do not use that phrase any more). Overweight fat. Chubby little kitties.
We sort of already knew this. At their last vet visit during the winter, Stella was "solid" and Bucky was "chubby." Both have quite the belly, although you cannot really see Bucky's through his long fur.
We did a little weigh in last night...
Bucky: 14
I kept telling myself that he is just a large cat, but that is definitely not a healthy weight.
Stella: 15
Yes, my tiny little kitten has somehow surpassed Bucky. She likes to eat.
So now we are staging Biggest Loser: Pets in our home. I have been reading about weight loss strategies for cats, since we cannot exactly just throw them on a treadmill while Jillian Michaels yells at them. We are starting with a few main changes. They'll get to eat 4 times a day, but will not have food just out all the time. Just plenty of water. We are also giving them both wet and dry food. Although I hate the wet stuff, it is apparently higher in protein than the dry stuff, which is mostly carbohydrates. I read some articles that said cats are carnivores - they need meat. Actually, a mouse a day is supposedly the perfect meal for a cat. I don't need mice in my house though, so I will stick with food from the store.
And exercise? Well, we are doing our best to get these lazy cats to play. I am just glad that they chase each other a lot.
Stella is used to eating all day long, so she currently thinks she is starving. It is hard not to give in to those little kitty cries, but it is for her own health.
Any suggestions for successful pet weight loss strategies?
Every penny counts, especially when you are young and trying to pay the bills. Here's my attempt to be creative with my fun and my funds.

Kitty Pic of the Week: Cool Kitty
It was a hot week for little kitties. Stella was pretty happy to have her little ice box to keep her cool.
Now that the heat has finally broken for a bit, she's back in her window, enjoying every minute she can spend watching birdies.

Kitty Pic of the Week: Super Size Me
When we bought cat food last night, we decided to go with the 16 lb bag and got the plastic pet food container. Stella appreciated this decision and decided to help me fill it...

The Great Outdoors
I am going to start by owning that I know I love my cats too much. And that you could probably care less about their "adventures", but they amuse me, so here we go...
Despite Chris' previous protests, I really wanted to take the cats outside. We saw a cat on a leash outside the other day, and I thought, why not?
So I got the harness and leash out, shimmied it around a squirming Bucky, and took him out the back door to the backyard. Before Chris got home, of course. Bucky and I may have met him in the driveway when he pulled in.
Bucky has chosen to stay posted by the door in the kitchen, and cries anytime we go near it, just to make sure we know he wants to go outside again. He was originally a farm cat. It's in his blood.
Pets are funny.

At first he was not totally sure what was going on. He does not like loud noises, so it took a minute to adjust to the sounds of kids, cars, etc.
But then he started rolling around in the grass, and decided he was lovin' life.
Eating grass? Yes, please!
He managed to find the dirtiest place in the yard and roll around in it over and over. Awesome.
He could have stayed out there all day. But unfortunately we only have one leash. And I wanted to give it a shot with Stella, who had been sitting in the window, watching Bucky and I outside.
She was much less excited and was sort of on edge for awhile. She was really not a fan of the harness, and kept giving me dirty looks for being so close to her.
She stayed on the perimeter for awhile, and kept trying to duck under these bushes. She really wanted to explore on her own.
But then she found a squirrel climbing the garage, and was a little more interested. She eventually ate some grass too.
Sitting on the driveway seemed to be more her style. Unfortunately when I took her inside the house, she bolted up the stairs, pulling the harness to the point that it released her. Loose cat in the hallway! She may not be going out again for awhile.
Pets are funny.

Kitty Pic of the Week: All Tucked In
Someone has taken to sleeping under the covers. She crawls all the way underneath, and then turns around so her head is peeking out. I saw her do it once under a quilt, and thought she was just playing, but since then she has done it several times as a way to start her nap. Adorbs.

Kitty Pic of the Week: Birthday Boy
Allow me a moment to be a crazy cat lady. My little ball o' fluff is five years old today!
It seems like only yesterday that he was a mini puff, so small that he would fall right off my lap. Happy Birthday Bucky!

Kitty Pics of the Week
These poor little furballs are gonna miss this place...
Sadly, no screen porch at the new place. Which they will find out very soon. Because the moving begins today!

Kitty Pic of the Week
Stella's role in our packing process: cardboard box quality control. She prefers to test each one before anything gets packed. Bucky is still in denial.

Kitty Pic of the Week: Home Sweet Home
Stella found a new home inside the Build-A-Bear Box. And she was excited to find that it came complete with an escape hatch on the front. I didn't think she'd fit, but I guess when you have a big cat sneaking in your roof, you make it happen!

Oh Kittens...
I apologize, I've been too distracted by kittens to post.
Kittens truly are the best thing ever, as evidenced by this cute photo.

Introducing....Stella!
There is a new member of the family and her name is Stella!
We brought her home over Labor Day weekend and are so excited to have her. Bucky was less excited at first, but he's warming up to her and now has someone to chase and wrestle with. They also spend most of their days napping together under my bed.
Stella is about five months old and has proven to be a sweetie, although she is definitely a handful. I have forgotten how many adventures that kittens have. She gets into everything!
Here are a few shots of her exploring the place. Notice that she is so small and fast that she's hard to capture!
A little scrapbooking fun.
Climbing the mountain of laundry.
Hanging out in a backpack. (I think hiding from Bucky)
At the end of the day, I have two tired kitties. Looking forward to all of the adventures ahead!

Bucky Shot of the Week
Look at this cutie!

Three years ago this week, I picked up Bucky from a farm in Central Iowa. This was the shot from when I first put him into the carrier to drive 45 minutes home with him crying the entire way. He didn't have a name yet because I didn't know if he was a boy or a girl. Would you have been able to figure it out?
Just a few days after I got him, he drove 6 hours in a U-Haul with me to St. Louis, again crying the entire way. Ahh, the adventures that we've had together.
