30B430 Book 27: The Chaperone

You thought this would be my Canada post, right? Tricked ya! I actually finished two audio books during my long car trip. Here is the first one...

I decided to grab The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty as my next Audible book mainly because Elizabeth McGovern reads it. I was going through some serious Downton Abbey withdrawal, and this is as close as I could get. I really did not know anything about the story.

I was pleasantly surprised by the book, which tells the story of Cora Carlisle, a woman from Wichita, Kansas, who decides to accompany a young Louise Brooks to New York City. Louise, just 15, is auditioning for a dance company, and needs someone to keep an eye on her because she is one crazy wild child. Cora doesn't necessarily know what she is getting herself into, but agrees to go with because she has some business of her own in New York City that relates to her secret past. During their time in the city, Cora's adventures become almost more interesting than those of Louise. The historical fiction, which starts in the roaring 20s follows Cora throughout the rest of her life, through the Great Depression, The Dust Bowl, and throughout many other major historical events.

I did not realize that while Cora is a fictional character, Louise Brooks was a real woman, who starred in silent films back in the 1920s. She was famous for her short, dark, bobbed haircut. Here is her picture:

Louise is a central character, but Cora is the star. Throughout the book, she demonstrates that she is more open-minded and assertive than many of the women of her time. Her story takes a number of twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. The book got really slow at points, but was a good story as a whole.

Canada is coming soon. Promise.

Northern Exposure Part 1: Treating Ourselves

I have been working myself up for a Treat Yo Self weekend over the past few months. I think that Ann and I just may have achieved that one during my first full day in Duluth.

This day had it all. Pedicures. Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Sushi. Makeup. Boots. Accessories. Flannel. You heard it. Flannel.
Ruby Toes!

It is only appropriate to buy flannel in MN for a trip to Canada
The only thing keeping me from calling it a shopping "spree" is that we were fairly leisurely. Not exactly spree like.  But there was shopping. Lots of it.

Ann is a wonderful/horrible shopping partner. Why? Because she is incredibly encouraging and complimentary. Very good at finding things that I "need." Which is only horrible for my wallet. Wonderful for my self esteem, and my wardrobe. Do I need new earrings - of course! She makes shopping super fun!

Ann is not only a good shopping partner, she is a great eating partner. We ate quite well during my visit. Delicious food and beer at Fitger's Brewery on my first night there. Sushi for lunch on day two. Burgers at The Anchor in Superior, WI - a totally awesome dive. And I cannot go without mentioning the food and pie that we had at the Rustic Inn Cafe in Castle Danger, MN on our drive back from Canada. Wow.

Blueberry cream pie on a meringue crust. I must figure out how to recreate this.
Ann did me right - sending me off on the road with some stuffed french toast from Uncle Louis Cafe on Sunday. I ate every last bite on that plate.

We also got to explore the city a bit more before I left and get an up close and personal view of the lift bridge letting a boat through. Exciting stuff!

Lots of treats throughout this weekend. The big treat though - our trip to Canada. Which will just have to wait for another post. Who is excited?!

A Taste of Northern Exposure

I had the most amazing weekend up north in Wisconsin/Minnesota/Canada. And I can't wait to share it with you. Unfortunately, I still need to upload and sift through all of the photos, so it may be a minute or two.

What I will share is a quick taste of the seriously beautiful fall colors that I got to "ooh" and "ahh" at for my seven-hour drive up to Duluth. Or as Ann Miller would say, "Ooh, pretty!"

Ooh

Ahh
Each section of trees was seriously more stunning than the last. Should I be taking photos while driving....probably not. I apologize. But wow. These pictures don't even do it justice. If you don't have anything to do this week, definitely take a drive up north and enjoy nature's awesomeness.

Stay tuned for more of our adventures, including checking off some of my 30B430 items! There will be waterfalls. There will be nature. There will be pedicures. (One of these things is not like the other...haha!)

Happy Monday!
